Amelia Johnson Contemporary presents a curated exhibition on the theme of light and how artists make use of light sources in their work. Konstantin Bessmertny and Kacey Wong present neon slogans that are sculptural in their own right but use light to add colour and gravitas to the written word. Faiza Butt and Jimmy Chan use light to further illuminate meaning and detail in their works which are constructed using more traditional mediums such as painting, digital photography and sculpture. Lee Sang Hyun presents three stunning videos composed using elements of nature, archival photographs and technology commonly used in airports and train stations to display information. Incredibly diverse subjects and themes emphasize the malleability of light and its impact within the context of fine art.

Primarily painters, sculptors and photographers, the artists included in this exhibition represent four countries and are united solely by their use light of as an integral component in the works featured in this exhibition.

Biographies:

Based in Macau, Russian artist, KONSTANTIN BESSMERTNY achieved his technically mastery after seven years of studying Fine Art in the grand academies of the former soviet union, combined with his detailed knowledge on a wide-range of subjects including literature, music, history and politics lend to his work an intelligence and a credibility that is rarely witnessed in contemporary art.

Born in 1973, FAIZA BUTT trained at the NCA in Lahore and the Slade School of Art in London. Her work has been shown in various museums and included in several publications. Most recent notable exhibitions include Hanging Fire: Contemporary Art from Pakistan, an exhibition of works by Pakistani artists held at the Asia Society in New York in 2009 and the Sovereign Art Foundation Award where she was one of the finalists in 2010.

CHAN YU-WO, JIMMY initially trained as an Architect at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen, Scotland and at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College, London. In 2011 he obtained his Master of Fine Arts from the prestigious Chinese University of Hong Kong. His photographic and multimedia work has been exhibited in Hong Kong and Australia.

Korean artist, LEE SANG HYUN has been awarded many residencies and grants including the ISCP in New York and the International residency of Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Korea. His photography, video installations, films and performances have been exhibited extensively in Asia, the Middle East and Germany.

Hong Kong artist, KACEY WONG uses sculpture and installation art to explore architecture and the poetics of space. He was the recipient of the Rising Artist Award and the Outstanding Arts Education Award given by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2003. Kacey studied architecture at Cornell University and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Chelsea School of Art and Design and Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His mobile home tricycle project “Wandering Home” was selected for the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale in Italy.
