Description

This is a world class sea kayak day trip! Recognised by UNESCO as globally unique, the Sai Kung East Hong Kong Global Geopark is a spectacular and beautiful part of Hong Kong.  We explore the wonders of two protected and beautiful islands from Sai Kung. This includes snorkeling over coral reef, exploring mangrove habitats, hiking through an ancient Chinese village and visiting Sharp Island.

This is an easy sea kayak trip in protected waters which will cover about 10 km’s paddling around the inner islands of the UNESCO Global Geopark. Our trip departs the beach in Sai Kung, heading east into Shelter Bay. Just off-shorte lies two of the most historically significant islands in Hong Kong, Sharp and Yin Tin Tsai.
Sharp island is significant because of it’s global geoloical significance (see below) and Yim Tin Tsai because of its cultural and historical significance. We explore both, discovering the secrets of each.
SKILL LEVEL: This trip is suitable for beginners.
FITNESS LEVEL: You will need basic fitness to complete this distance.
KAYAKING EXPERIENCE: No kayaking experience is required
DURATION: 1 day – easy (approx.10 kms)
DEPARTS: Thursday and Friday, 10:00 am – in front of the Macdonalds Restaurant in Sai Kung.
We depart from Sai Kung beach at 11:00am after getting changed into our sea kayaking gear. From the beach we paddle the short distance to Sharp Island keeping a lookout for the sea eagles that roam the skies around here. At Sharp island we explore the Geopark Tombolo and snorkle over the fringing reefs. Sharp Island is the exposed rim of the ancient and now flooded volcanic caldera.
After lunch we paddle around the various sand islands that dot the inner Shelter Bay region into a unique, sand bottomed mangrove environment. Again this is a chance to snorkel with the reef fish and other marine critters that live within the mangrove tree roots.
Our next destination is Yin Tin Tsai, one of the earliest western settlemnets in Hong Kong and the site of the oldest church in the country. The abandned illage was once a thriving commercial centre growing salt and harvesting pearls. Today it is a derelict island only inhabited by day visitors..
Our return journey takes us back to Sai Kung beach and the end of the sea kayaking. This is not, however, the end of the tour.
After getting changed into dry cloths (after a warm shower) we head into Sai Kung village - a favourite location for experienced westerners who live in Hong Kong. The viallage boasts an old section and a new section as well as a modern promenade and many waterfront seafood restaurants.
A final refreshing drink before the tour finishes and you head back to your hotel room in the busy city of Hong Kong.
